5 Ways to Wear a Trench Coat This Season

Over a suit. The trench coat's original job was to go over tailoring, and it still does that better than any other outerwear. Worn open over a suit on the commute, it keeps the sharp lines of the jacket visible while adding warmth and a layer of quiet polish.

With denim and a knit. For off-duty days, pair the trench with raw or washed denim and a simple crewneck sweater underneath. Belted at the waist, it turns a basic jeans-and-knit outfit into something considerably more put-together without any extra effort.

Over a hoodie. An unexpected but increasingly popular combination — a trench worn open over a hoodie plays tailored against casual, and works particularly well in a neutral colour palette where the coat and hoodie sit close in tone.

With tailored trousers, no tie. Skip the suit jacket entirely and let the trench do that job instead. Paired with tailored trousers, a plain shirt, and no tie, it reads smart-casual and travels easily from a client meeting to dinner afterward.

Belted over all-black. A monochrome outfit — black trousers, black knit, black boots — gives a beige or camel trench room to be the focal point. Cinch the belt for a defined waist and let the coat's colour do the work against the darker base.

Whichever way you wear it, the coat is built to be the constant in your rotation — the piece that pulls together whatever's underneath.
